Well Done Nicky!

February 25th, 2008

The club are very pleased and extremely proud to announce that Nicky Hurst has been asked to commence training with the Under 12 squad of the Plymouth Argyle School of Excellence at Ivybridge.

Nicky has come up through the ranks of the Plymouth Argyle system since he started at their St Austell sessions back in 2005.

In the summer of 2007 he was asked to commence training at Bodmin. This is one of the "feeder" schools which aim to provide boys for the actual School of Excellence team at Ivybridge. Since then he has been training twice a week at Bodmin, undergoing regular assessments.

Following his most recent assessment, he was asked to attend weekly training sessions at Ivybridge, starting after Easter.

Such is the quality of boys, Plymouth Argyle themselves refer to this crop of Under 12s as "The Golden Year", so to be asked to train with them is a massive achievement.

Such is Nickys quality, he has shone whilst playing for Wadebridge in an older age group for the last two seasons.
Well done Nick, everyone at the club wishes you the very best of luck, keep it up!!

Under 15s - Wadebridge 5 v 0 Tintagel

February 24th, 2008

Check out our excellent Under 15's progress this season by clicking hereThe under 15s faced 4th placed Tintagel today and they came out 5v0 victors playing some great football in the 2nd half.

Will Mitchell and Andy Thomas started up front today for the first time and played very well together. In the first half we flattered to deceive as we reached the break 2 goals to the good, both from Dan Witts, the first a penalty and the 2nd heading home unmarked from a corner.

We had a good heart to heart at half time as the players knew they were not performing to the levels they have set themselves this season. The 2nd half was then a different match as we dominated from start to finish with some great play, especially some very nice build ups starting at the back and playing some great build up play, some resulting in goals.

Further goals came from Mikey Green who hit a speculative lob from 30 yards out which deceived the keeper and went in off the keepers hands as he misjudged the spin Mikey had applied.

Then followed 2 excellent and cool strikers finishes, the first from Andy Thomas who turned in the box and calmly finished across the keeper. The second from Will Mitchell as he rounded off an excellent move. It looked like he had taken a touch too much as he ran in on the keeper but then he applied a cool finish as he poked it under the advancing keeper.

Everyone was outstanding in the 2nd half and we played very well as a team.

So now we have a record in the league of played 13, won 13, lost 0, drawn 0, scored 58, against 0 and maximum 39 points. A fantastic effort by the team to reach March and to still not have conceded a goal!

Indian Queens vs Wadebridge U13

February 3rd, 2008

Indian Queens started the quicker of the two sides and James Gallagher had to be quick off his line in the first couple of minutes to clear the ball away from our goal it was not until the 8th minute when it was another clearance by Gally that found Aaron Howard who pushed a lovely ball through to Rob Morris only to see the keeper save it, the midfield on both sides played good football and it was going to be won or lost here. We were awarded a free kick which Tom Sprake put over the top of the home side defence for Wayne Connell to chase, the keeper was quick off his line to collect the ball.

A few moments later good attacking football down the right which was started by Tom Cox found Wayne and neatly passed to Aaron who shot just past the post, for a while it was all Wadebridge, on one occasion we started to play like we can, with a move that was started by Ryan Bowers passed to Jamie Dennis, who laid the ball to Tom Cox which brought out a good save by the home keeper. It was from this that Indian Queen scored when we did not clear the ball and Gally could only watch the ball go into his goal.

Half Time 1 - 0

In the second half and playing down the slope we started to play good football and after several attempts Glyn Sandoe had a shot which hit the post and went out for a goal kick, but we kept putting the pressure on and in the 14th minute it was from a corner taken by Rob Morris who found Jamie Dennis on the 6 yard line to tap it in to make it 1-1. On a couple of times Sam Woodard and Josh Gilbert playing in the centre of the defence had to be on their toes to clear several attempts by the home side as we pushed forward. It was on one of these attacks that Dan Philp found his way through a crowded midfield, passed to Dan West but the ball got stuck under his feet only to see the attack break down.

It was one of those games when it seemed no matter what we did the ball would not go into our opponents net. James Ferguson playing his first game back from injury had only been on the park for 15 minutes when he took a bad knock to the knee and he was unable to take any further part, time was running out and man of the match Wayne Connell chased a through ball only to see the Indian Queens keeper bring off another good save. On a move down the left, the ball was knocked in by Rob Morris and it fell to Jamie Dennis and from 12 yards put it in for his and our second of the game with 10 minutes left. Ryan Bowers made some nice runs down the left linking up with Dan West and Glyn Sandoe, the shot of the day was when Tom Sprake hit the ball from 30 yards only to see the keeper push it on to the cross bar and out for a corner.

Final Score 1 - 2

Well played boys, another 3 points!

Team: Aaron Howard, Ryan Bowers, James Gallagher, Josh Gilbert, Sam Woodard, Man of the Match - Wayne Connell, Tom Sprake, Jamie Dennis, James Ferguson, Glyn Sandoe, Daniel Philp, Dan West, Rob Morris and Tom Cox.

Wadebridge u13 Vs Bude Town Youth

January 27th, 2008

After a long break due to Christmas and the bad weather, Wadebridge had their first match of 2008 on a sunny Sunday morning. It was a scrappy opening 5 or 6 mins but then a move down the centre with an over the top ball by Jamie Dennis found Wayne Connell who scored but it was disallowed for off side, on 15 mins a long clearance by James Cackett over the Bude defence again found Wayne Connell who this time beat the off side trap to score.

This settled Wadebridge and they began to play their football, Sam Woodard controlled the ball well, started to move forward and with a well placed pass, Jamie Dennis was able to put the ball pass the keeper to make it 2-0. On occasions that Bude did attack the defence they were able to cope and it was on one attack that was stopped by Ryan Bowers he played a nice ball to Aaron Howard who ran down the left put a lovely ball across and Dan West was only a couple of inches away to get our 3rd.

Wayne Connell got his 2nd of the game with good play down the right between Tom Sprake and Tom Cox, two mins later Bude scored when we did not clear the ball and it fell to a Bude striker, Wadebridge continued to play attractive football at times when Tom Cox took on a couple of defenders put a good ball to Sam Mitchell and from just outside of the box hit a superb left footed shot just going wide.

Half time 3-1

The second half was only 5 mins old when the lively Tom Cox (something to do with the porridge for breakfast ?) crossed the ball for Jamie Dennis to get his second and our 4th, almost from the kick off we got our 5th when Ryan Bowers played the ball to Aaron Howard who flicked it on to man of the match Josh Gilbert for his first, on a couple of times when we were pushing forward Bude broke through only for James Gallagher to be quick off of his line to clear the ball out of any danger.

We seemed to relax a little and within a short time Bude scored two goals to make it 5-3, with this we started to play again when Sam Mitchell chased to what seemed a lost ball from James Gee put a good ball right across the Bude box but no one was there, Wadebridge rode the storm for the last 5 mins but Bude nearly got there 4th had Ryan Bowers not been on the line to clear it, with that the ref blew the final whistle and Wadebridge booked there place in the semi final.

Full time 5-3

Well played boys, we are the only team in our league through to the semi finals!

Team

James Gallagher, Dan West, Sam Woodard, Ryan Bowers, James Cackett, Tom Sprake, Tom Cox, Jamie Dennis, James Gee, Man of the Match - Josh Gilbert, Wayne Connell, Sam Mitchell, and Aaron Howard.

U12B Wadebridge Town 4-0 Pensilva

January 27th, 2008

A lacklustre performance today could possibly be due to not having played for quite a long while or for the fact that we were only up against a Pensilva side consisting of just 9 players and maybe we felt we did not have to over exert ourselves to get the result.
We had three players unavailable ourselves today and as a result only had the bear eleven.
The first 20 minutes of the match were very scrappy and you would not have noticed the numerical advantage that we had over our opponents. Most of the football was played inevitably in the Pensilva half of the pitch but no sooner had we got the ball then we would squander possession with some rash passes and hurried clearances rather than keeping our shape and moving the ball around to tire our opposition. Our first goal came when Harry Coles followed up an attack to slot the ball home. This settled us down and we started to find our passes better. A second goal came when Jack Bartons lofted cross shot from the right wing dropped over their keeper and into the far side of the goal. Just before half time Sam Roberts struck a fierce shot which was goal bound until it hit a defender but when it fell back to him again nothing could stop his second shot from slamming into the back of the net.
The second half saw little change from the first and we still failed to make any real advantage of our extra numbers. We did add a fourth goal when after some good passing between Liam Parsons and Jack Barton the ball was fed through to Kyle Lawrence just inside their penalty area he controlled the ball and turned to loop his shot over the keeper for a well deserved goal.
The match ended 4-0 and another 3 points had been earned.
It was one of those days today when we just didn’t click as a team but nonetheless well played to all the team in particular Kyle and Sam for helping out in goal for a half each and to Connor who played well in an unfamiliar position.

Team from: Kyle Lawrence, Curtis Halling, Ben Cleave, Connor Flew, Daniel Philp, Jack Barton, Liam Parsons, Sam Roberts, Haryy Coles, Ryan Perring, Jack Parkyn

St Stephens U 15's 0, WTFC U15's 2

January 13th, 2008

The Under 15's recorded a league double over last season's champions, to stretch their lead at the top of the Under 15's league to eight points. A superb team performance saw 'The Bridgres' record a 2 v 0 victory that puts them in the driving seat for league honours this year.
St Stephens had the better of it for twenty minutes, but rarely threatened the away goal, and once Andy Thomas had given Wadebridge the lead afetr twenty minutes, there was only one team in it. Jacob Nichol made it two just after half time as Wadebridge dominated the second half. Ben Hurst needed to make one brave save at the feet of the home striker to maintain the defensive record of no goals conceded this season.
Choosing a Man of the Match would be unfair, as this was a superb all round team performance and a well deserved victory.

U13A - Bude Town Youth Blues 1 v 0 Wadebridge Town

January 12th, 2008

The recent flu virus, injuries, and Cornwall cricket trials meant that we went to Bude with several players missing, but due the quality of the squad we have, we still hoped to get a result.

Play was fairly evenly contested throughout the first half. Bude probably just about shaded it as Wadebridge Will Wood was the busier of the 2 keepers. The Wadebridge line up was defensive due to lack of available personnel, so we probably caused our own problems by sitting too deep at times. But we still managed to restrict their number of chances and Will Woods handling was faultless.

Cobi Jago worked a good opening for himself but the Bude keeper saved well, and Cameron Wickins met Richard McOwens corner, but his header flashed wide.

At half time it remained level at 0-0.

The dreaded flu virus robbed us of our only substitute as Tom Whitehead was too ill to re-take the field. It meant that several players were now playing out of position, but the brave remaining eleven battled on.

Kane Dunnet battled away up front on his own but didn’t get the run of luck he deserved. Meanwhile Bude always looked dangerous and delivered some quality balls into the box.

The breakthrough came after 20 minutes of the second half when Bude were awarded a free kick. Again they delivered a quality ball in which a Bude player just got a touch to it with his head. The speed of the delivery gave keeper Will Wood no chance as the ball hit the back of the net.

As Wadebridge pressed looking for an equaliser, Bude nearly scored a second but some strong defending from Luke Ford and brave goalkeeping from Will Wood meant the score stayed at 1-0.

Even though we come away from this game with no points, it was still a good performance and we feel confident of racking up the points again once we return to a fully fit squad.
Unlucky boys, don’t let your heads drop. We know you’ll be back!!

U13A Wadebridge Town 1 v 4 Tregorrick Park

January 6th, 2008

Wadebridge surrendered their 100% home record to league leaders Tregorrick, but not without a valiant effort. The last league game we lost had been against Tregorrick way back in September.

Both sides started brightly, but it was Wadebridge who began to get on top. Richard McOwen was enjoying an excellent game as he made several telling runs down the right hand side. Wadebridge midfield were all playing well and getting behind the ball as instructed. Town looked good as we frequently broke at speed, but were just unable to find that final ball through to Nicky Hurst up front.

Tregorrick though aren’t top of the league by any fluke, and they always looked dangerous coming forward. A few half chances had been created by both sides, but after 20 minutes Tregorrick scored with a well taken goal.

Wadebridge responded well and nearly equalised but Nicky Hurst’ shot drifted agonisingly wide. But 5 minutes later Wadebridge got the equaliser they deserved. Following good interchange of passing in midfield, Cameron Wickins played a great through ball for Richard McOwen to run onto. His speed carried him clear and he neatly put the ball through the keepers legs to score.

Wadebridge were still enjoying the lions share of the play, and even though keeper Will Wood had to make a couple of important saves, we still felt aggrieved not to be in front at the break.
Half time 1-1.

Wadebridge found themselves under more pressure in the second half but our defence were coping superbly. Full backs Luke Ford and Charley Beanse kept their wide men at bay, Tom Whitehead and Josh Barnes held firm in the middle with John Vinton sweeping up behind. Ten minutes into the half and everything seemed to be going to plan and then we failed to clear the ball and conceded a scrappy goal.

Tregorrick gained in confidence and had a good spell of possession, but again Town coped well and Ryan Brown alongside Cameron Wickins began to pull the strings in central midfield. Kane Dunnett had several good runs down the left, and also tackled back well on numerous occasions. Cameron Young and Cobi Jago were introduced to give us added options as we searched for the equaliser.

As we entered the last quarter of the game, the next goal was always going to prove decisive, as we felt that if we got the equaliser we could go on to win it. But, as mentioned before Tregorrick are a quality side, and they scored a quality goal to put themselves 3-1 up. From the edge of the area the player made room for the shot and then fired a powerful drive across the goal into the far corner.

This was a real blow for Wadebridge, but again they responded well and forced a succession of corners. But it was not to be our day as time was rapidly running out. Wadebridge had time for one more attack and so pushed several forward. Tregorrick then had the final word as they broke away and scored with the last kick of the game.

A 4-1 score line doesn’t really reflect the game as Wadebridge gave a good account of themselves against a table topping side who haven’t lost a game all season. The whole team deserve a lot of credit for this performance with special mentions for Luke Ford, Tom Whitehead and Richard McOwen who all enjoyed excellent games.
