We welcome the players, staff and supporters of Callington Town for this SWPL game on Wednesday evening.
Last week was a good one for the team. Getting through to the next qualifying round of the FA Vase, our first victory in the competition in my time here, was followed by a decent performance in defeat at Liskeard and a late winner against St Blazey.
If I’m honest our best display came in the one we lost but the energy we showed going again 48 hours later at Blaise Park was really uplifting for me and the management team.
I’m hoping that win will be the springboard for us to relax and get back to playing a little more. We are playing a brand of football that’s a little too risk free currently. Quite understandable after losing two such influential players to injury in Tom Strike and Jacob Smale. They are two of the more experience lads and we are a very young side without them, but we are good enough to be a little braver in possession in my opinion.
We’ve managed to add to the squad in recent weeks. Jake Cribb, Lewis Tonkin, Bryn Sturdy, Leighton Carhart, Dayll Beesley and Blaine Walton have joined.
I want competition for places as that drives standards.
We were light on numbers not so long ago, a little vulnerable, so it’s nice to have the numbers in. It also gives me the opportunity to assess the resilience of the lads who find themselves out of the team, for the first time in a while.
Callington will be a tough test. They may be towards the bottom currently, but the fixture computer/secretary has thrown up a really difficult start for them. I don’t see them being in their current position for long. We will have to apply ourselves like we did last week and hopefully add some extra swagger, to prevail.
Enjoy the game everyone.
